Excluding my friends in the southern hemisphere, the middle of winter is upon us. And speaking on behalf of New Englanders, we’ve been blanked by snow and subarctic temperatures on and off since before December. Most recently there seem to be more reasons to hunker in to hibernate than not, challenging my efforts to make healthy choices and feeling well.
For many, this is the time of year when New Year’s resolutions quickly fade, a distant memory replaced by day dreams of warmer, sunnier days. Strung together these daydreams are the string of hope woven throughout the week to keep sanity in check. If this sounds like you and you find yourself in a place where old routines and mindsets have taken root, don’t beat yourself up.
Be kind to yourself. It is easy to get caught up in mindless thinking which leads to mindless behavior. Understanding this you can instead give yourself the chance to think of doing something different by taking a moment to stop the thought train in its tracks. Doing so opens the door to possibility.
What does this look like? Let me show you a couple of examples:
- Waking up cranky with the first thought of all that you have to do that day? (Guilty! This was me recently!) Reconnect with what it feels like to wake well rested and at peace. Then you can take the next step and think about ways to feeling more rested. Perhaps it’s going to bed earlier, journaling to write down all that is on your mind before bed or giving a boost to your physical activity routine.
- Feeling famished and willing to grab the first thing that looks remotely like food just to satisfy yourself? Again, take a moment to stop this thought process and turn to thinking instead about what it feels like when you eat one of your favorite healthy foods. For me it’s a sweet & juicy clementine. The smell of citrus when it sprays from the unwrapping of the peel makes me feel like I have a ray of sunshine beaming through me. Once I connect with how good it feels to eat healthy, logic kicks in and I am ready to think about ways to make that happen.
Putting a halt to mindless thinking and choosing to be conscious about your behaviors reinforces healthy living and keeps it a priority. Is it work? Yes. Is the work worth it? ABSOLUTELY! It leads to greater happiness and fulfillment. Now who doesn’t want more of that?
I challenge you to think for a moment about the routines that you have in your life. Pick one. Does it serve you?
If it doesn’t what do you really want and how do you really want to feel?
What is one simple thing you can do differently today?
